When your child secures their place at university, one of the biggest next steps is finding the right accommodation. For many parents, this is the first time their son or daughter will be living away from home and it can feel like a huge step.
At Abodus, we speak with thousands of parents every year, so we know you have questions. Here’s a straightforward, honest guide that answers the most common ones.
What types of student accommodation are available in the UK?
There are generally three main types:
- University-owned halls: Managed by the university, usually located on or near campus.
- Private student accommodation (like Abodus): Professionally managed, purpose-built properties designed specifically for students.
- Private houses or flats: Often shared with friends in later university years.
Private student accommodation offers the perfect balance between independence and support; security, maintenance and bills are all taken care of.
Is private student accommodation safe?
Of course – safety is always the top priority.
At Abodus, every building has:
- 24/7 on-site teams or security
- Secure key fob access
- CCTV throughout communal areas
- Fire safety systems
We also provide mental health and wellbeing support, ensuring students feel supported both physically and emotionally.
What’s included in the rent?
Parents are often pleasantly surprised by how much is covered. At Abodus, all bills are included:
- Electricity, water and heating
- High-speed Wi-Fi
- Contents insurance
- Access to on-site facilities (gyms, study areas, social spaces)
- Maintenance and security
There are no surprise bills or hidden fees, which makes budgeting simple and stress-free.
What if something breaks or my child needs help?
Every Abodus property has an on-site team available to help with maintenance issues, wellbeing concerns, or any questions at all!
Students can report maintenance problems online, and our team aims to fix them quickly. Plus, every resident has access to 24-hour support — so there’s always someone they can turn to if needed.
How do I know my child will settle in?
We understand that moving away from home is a huge change. That’s why we create a warm, community-focused environment from day one.
Our welcome weeks and regular social events make it easy for students to meet new friends and build a support network.
If either you or your child is shy or anxious about the move, our friendly on-site teams are trained to offer reassurance and help them adjust.
Can I visit or help with the move-in?
Of course! Parents are more than welcome to help their children move in — in fact, we encourage it. We hold a check in weekend at all of our properties, where students move in and get the chance to meet new people.
You can even take a virtual tour of most properties before you visit, so you know exactly what to expect.
What happens if my child wants to move out or cancel?
We understand that circumstances can change and things might not necessarily go to plan.
If your child doesn’t get their university place or visa, Abodus offers a No Place No Pay policy. You’ll receive a full refund as long as you provide proof of the situation by the stated deadline.
What makes Abodus different from other student accommodation providers?
We’re not just a place to live — we’re a community designed for students.
Here’s what sets us apart:
- Gold Accredited Provider with IIS
- Inclusive wellbeing and social programmes
- Purpose-built rooms and communal spaces
- A focus on safety, transparency and support
