Abodus Students Say – Hollingbury House

Compared to one year ago today, we are living in a very different world.

We know this is especially true for university students living away from home and in accommodation, so we set out on a mission to learn from Abodus residents exactly what it’s been like living with us over the past year.

We’ve compiled all our interviews into a blog series called, “Abodus Students Say,” and over the next several weeks, you will get to e-meet our residents and learn about their living experiences first-hand.

Our first of several student interviews is with Kan, a resident at Hollingbury House in Brighton. Kan is from Hong Kong and he is studying psychology with criminology at the University of Sussex. He chose to study at Sussex because of its credible reputation and high rankings in criminology and psychology. Read on below to learn more about Kan’s living experience with Abodus.

In general…

Abodus

How long have you been living in your Abodus accommodation?

Kan

Since last year in September.

Abodus

And did your room exceed or meet your expectations? Was it what you were expecting? I know you probably did a lot of online shopping before you decided.

Kan

Yeah, yeah, it met my expectations because I visited this room before I bought it. So yeah, just the same [as I expected].

On events and engagement…

Abodus

What virtual events have you attended so far?

Kan

The lantern [for Chinese New Year]. I did that one. And also the jogging event [for Thanksgiving]! There are posters everywhere to update me on what is going on. Also, Dan and Edit keep me updated with emails [about the events]. I would say maybe the lantern decoration [was my favourite] because it is Chinese New Year.

Abodus

Have you taken part in any of the Instagram giveaways that we’ve done?

Kan

Yeah, I did enter one! I think it was the £200 voucher for Amazon.

Abodus

Have you taken advantage of any of the free samples that have been delivered on site? If so, which of the samples that you’ve tried have been your favourite?

Kan

Ah, yeah. Yeah! The non-alcoholic beer has been my favourite.

Abodus

And let’s say considering what we do offer – kind of everything that we’ve gone through from events and engagement, our giveaways, our freebies, the VIP programme, the blogs – do you feel like Abodus has provided you with an experience of “more than just a room?”

Kan

Yeah, it’s so much more than I expected. Just compared to where I lived at last year, there’s so much more to engage in [at Hollingbury House].

On wellbeing…

Abodus

Now I know that you’re living a long way away from home. So while you’ve been living away from home, have you struggled at all with maintaining your physical or mental well-being?

Kan

For physical well-being, I use some resistance bands so I can just do some exercises in my dorm. Yeah, for mental well-being, I would say, I can just do a video call with my family. So neither is really a big issue for me.

Abodus

As an Abodus resident, do you feel a sense of security at the Hollingbury House? And do you feel comfortable there?

Kan

Um, security? Yeah, it is very safe, I feel. Here, I feel so secure. And it’s comfortable too.

On Covid-19…

Abodus

Okay, so let’s move on to some questions about Covid. Have you been home at all since March of last year? And how did you feel coming back to Hollingbury House?

Kan

Yeah. I went home for a few months, then I came back again. I feel very safe. I don’t really have any concerns about Covid-19. And it [the signage] has been very useful. I especially like that there’s a line for people to line up when they’re waiting for the elevator.

Overall…

Abodus

How do you feel about Hollingbury House overall?

Kan

It’s very new— All of the building and the structures. Yeah, it’s very new here! I’ve rebooked [my room] already!
